    Passage 2
Several research teams have found thatnewborns prefer their mothers' voices over those of other people. Now a team ofscientists has gone an intriguing step further: they have found that newbornscry in their native language. "We have provided evidence that languagebegins with the very first cry melodies," says Kathleen Wermke of theUniversity of Wurzburg, Germany, who led the research.
?"The dramatic finding of this study isthat not only are newborns capable of producing different cry melodies, butthey prefer to produce those melody patterns that are typical for the?ambientlanguage they have heard during their fetal life, within the lasttrimester," said Wermke. "Contrary to orthodox interpretations, thesedata support the importance of human infants' crying for seeding languagedevelopment."
???Ithad been thought that babies' cries are constrained by-their breathing patternsand respiratory apparatus, in which case a crying baby would sound like acrying baby no matter what the culture is, since babies are anatomically identical."The prevailing opinion used to be that newborns could not activelyinfluence their production of sound," says Wermke. This study refutes thatclaim: since babies cry in different languages, they must have somecontrol?? (presumably unconscious) overwhat they sound like rather than being constrained by the acoustical propertiesof their lungs, throat, mouth, and larynx. If respiration alone dictated what a crysounded like, all babies would cry with a falling-pitch pattern, since that'swhat happens as you run out of breath and air pressure on the throat'ssound-making machinery decreases. French babies apparently didn't get thatmemo. "German and French infants produce different types of cries, eventhough they share the same physiology," the scientists point out."The French newborns produce ‘nonphysiological' rising patterns," showingthat the sound of their cries is under their control.
????Although phonemes-speech sounds such as "ki" or"sh"-don't cross the abdominal barrier and reach the fetus, so-calledprosodic characteristics of speech do. These are the variations in pitch, rhythm, and intensity that characterize each language. Just as newbornsremember and prefer actual songs that they heard in utero, it seems, so theyremember and prefer both the sound of Mom’s voice and the melodic signature ofher language.
?The idea of the study wasn't to make the sound of a screaming baby more interestingto listeners-good luck with that-but to explore how babies acquire speech. Thatacquisition, it is now clear, begins months before birth, probably in the thirdtrimester: Newborns "not only have memorized the main intonation patternsof their respective surrounding language but are also able to reproduce thesepatterns in their own [sound] production," conclude the scientists. Newborns'"cries are already tuned toward their native language," giving them ahead start on sounding French or German (or, presumably, English or American orChinese or anything else: the scientists are collecting cries from morelanguages). This is likely part of the explanation for how babies developspoken language quickly and seemingly without effort. Sure, we may come into the world wired for language (thank you, Noam Chomsky), but we also benefitfrom the environmental exposure that tells us which language.
??Until this study, scientists thought that babies became capable of vocal imitation noearlier than 12 weeks of age. That's when infants listening to an adultspeaker producing vowels can parrot the sound. But that's the beginning of truespeech. It's sort of amazing that it took this long for scientists to realizethat if they want to see what sounds babies can perceive, remember, and playback, they should look at the sound babies produce best. So let the littleangel cry: she's practicing to acquire language.

What does Kathleen Wermke's research indicate?

A.Babies are unable to do vocal imitation.
B.Babies’ cries could be their early language acquisition.
C.Babies start speech acquisition months after their birth.
D.A crying baby is a crying baby no matter what the culture is.

    答案:B
    解析:
细节题。根据“scientists thought that babies became capable of vocal imitation noearlier than 12 weeks of age”可知,A项说法错误。根据“We have provided evidence that language begins with the very firstcry melodies”及后文可知,Kathleen Wermke的研究是用婴儿哭声声调的不同来说明婴儿语言的习得可能在子宫中就开始了,婴儿的哭声可能就是他们早期语言习得的体现。B项说法正确。根据“That acquisition,it is now clear, begins months before birth, probablyin the third trimester”可知,C项与原文不符。D项在文中直接进行了说明,不符合题目要求。故本题选B。

How Men Face the Fat Problem
It is a pleasure to see men of a certain age worrying about their weight. Listening to them is not such a pleasure .Because the men are new at the game, they don't hesitate to discuss the fat problem incessantly. However, women of the same age do not discuss the fat problem, especially not in mixed company. They prefer to face the problem with quiet dignity.Discussing the problem might only draw attention to some stray body part that may be successfully tucked away under an article of clothing.
The age at which a man begins to explore the fat problem can vary. The actual problem can manifest itself in the early 30's,but broad-range discussion usually starts later. There are early nonverbal symptoms .I've watched the rugged journalist who shares my apartment sneak by with a Diet Coke. His shirts are no longer neatly tucked in to display a trim waist. Recently he has begun to verbalize his anxiety. He tells me,with a sheepish grin, that he is taking his suits to Chinatown to have them"tailored", Still-older men have lost their dignity and rattle on unabashedly.Often, wives and children play important roles in their fat-inspection rituals. Take my oldest brother,a former college football player. His daughter says that several times a day he will stand at attention and call out, "Fat,medium or thin?"She knows the correct answer:medium.Thin would be an obvious stretch, and fat may not get her that new video.According to his wife,he stands in front of the mirror in the morning(before the day's meals take their toll),puts his hands behind his head and lurches into a side bend, then clutches the roll that has developed and says,"Am I getting fatter?"His wife is expected to answer,"You look like you may have lost a few pounds."
And then there are the exhusbands,a pitiful group. They are extremely vocal. When I go to the movies with one,he confides that he is suffering from great hunger because he is dieting. He hasn't eaten since the pancakes and sausages he wolfed down that morning. He pauses in his monologue while he buys his popcorn. After the movie,we sprint to a restaurant, where he again pau- ses to devour a basket of bread. Before he orders his chaste salad and soup,he grows plaintive.
    Do I think he's fat?

Men usually begin to worry about their weight when they are nearly 40.
    A: Right
    B: Wrong
    C: Not mentioned

    答案:C
    解析:
原文是“The age at which a man begins to explore the fat problem can vary. The actual problem can manifest itseif in the early 30's,but broad-range discussion usually starts later." 这两句说明男士开始讨论肥胖问题的时间不一致。

原文是“However, women of the same age do not discuss the fat problem, especially not in mixed company.”而题干是“especially in the presence of men."

    在第二段中谈及男人关注肥胖的年龄不尽相同,30出头这样的问题开始出现。

原文是“I've watched the rugged journalist who shares my apartment sneak by with a Diet Coke. His shirts are no longer neatly tucked in to display a trim waist."

    从作者下文描述的例子可以证明此信息是正确的。

原文是“She knows the correct answer:medium.Thin would be an obvious stretch, and fat may not get her that new video."

    从最后一段的描述中可知,ex-husbands自己节食,并爱倾诉,而并未提及他们没有妻子来同情他们的肥胖问题。

    CT Scans and Lung Cancer

Small or slow-growing nodules(小结节)discovered on a lung scan are unlikely to develop into tumors
over the next two years, researchers reported on Wednesday.
The findings, reported in the New England Journal of Medicine, could help doctors decide when to do
more aggressive testing for lung cancer. They could also help patients avoid unnecessarily aggressive and
potentially harmful testing when lesions(损伤)are found.
Lung cancer, the biggest cancer killer in the United States and globally,is often not diagnosed until it
has spread. It kills 159,000 people a year in the United States alone.
The work is part of a larger effort to develop guidelines to help doctors decide what to do when such
    growths,often discovered by accident,appear in a scan.
High-tech(高技术的)X-rays called CT scans can detect tumors一but they see all sorts of other blobs
(模糊的一团)that are not tumors , and often the only way to tell the difference is to take a biopsy(活检),
    a dangerous procedure.
At the moment, routine lung cancer screening is considered impractical because of its high cost and
because too many healthy people are called back for further testing.
Good guidelines could help make lung cancer screening practical,Dr. Rob van Kiaveren of the Erasmus
Medical Center in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, who led the new study, said in a telephone interview.
The team looked at 7,557 people at high risk for lung cancer because they were current or former
smokers. All received multidetector(多层螺旋)CT scans that measured the size of any suspicious-looking
    nodules.
Volunteers who had nodules over 9.7 mm in width,or had growth of 4. 6 mm that grew fast enough to more
than double in volume every 400 days, were sent for further testing. Of the 196 people who fell into that category,
70 were found to have lung cancer;10 additional cases were found years later.
But of the 7 ,361 who tested negative during screening, only 20 lung cancer cases later developed.
In a second round of screening done one year after the first,1.8 percent were sent to the doctor because they
had a nodule that was large or fast-growing. More than half turned out to have lung cancer.
The result means that if the screening test says you don't have lung cancer, you probably don't,the re-
searchers said."The chances of finding lung cancer one or two years after a negative first-round test were
    1 in 1,000 and 3 in 1,000 respectively,"they concluded.

Which is probably NOT true of lung cancer?
A:Smokers are usually considered to be at high risk for it.
B:It is the leading cause of cancer deaths around the world.
C:159,000 new cases of it are diagnosed in the U.S.each year.
D:It often goes unnoticed until it has spread.

根据文章第四段中“The work is part of a larger effort to develop guidelines to help doctors decide...”可知,专家们正在发展和完善对医生的指导方针。
    根据文章第十一段可知,A项正确、B项错误;由第八段中“…7 ,557 people at high risk" 可知C项正确;由第八段“The team looked at 7 , 557 people”和第十段“7 , 361 who tested nega- tive”可知D项正确。
    根据最后一段,我们知道这个患病比率在专家眼里是非常小的,如果首次检查表明你 没有患肺癌,你就很可能不会得肺癌。

Adam’s dog, a golden retriever named Hans, can respond to over 150 different commands. Adam cites this fact as evidence for his claim that Hans can understand the English language. Which of the following, if true, casts the most doubt on Adam’s claim that Hans can understand the English language?
    A

Each of the 150 commands to which Hans responds involves both a spoken word in English and a distinctive hand sign.

    B

Hans does not respond to the same commands when spoken to him by Adam’s French and Italian friends in their own languages.

    C

Scientists have demonstrated conclusively that canine vocal chords are incapable of replicating many of the sounds used in the English language.

    D

Animal behaviorists have demonstrated that even very young dogs surpass both wolves and chimpanzees—animals that are thought to be more intelligent than dogs—in the ability to understand human nonverbal communication.
