Practice 6 Perhaps the most striking quality of satiric literature is its freshness, its originality of perspective. Satire rarely offers original ideas. Instead, it presents the familiar in a new form. Satirists do not offer the world new philosophies. What they do is look at familiar conditions from a perspective that makes these conditions seem foolish, harmful, or affected. Satire jars us out of complacence into a pleasantly shocked realization that many of the values we unquestioningly accept are false.  Don Quixote makes chivalry seem absurd; Brave New World ridicules the pretensions of science; A Modest Proposal dramatizes starvation by advocating cannibalism. None of these ideas is original. Chivalry was suspected before Cervantes,2 humanists objected to the claims of pure science before Aldous Huxley,  and people were aware of famine before Swift.  It was not the originality of the idea that made these satires popular. It was the manner of expression, the satiric method, that made them interesting and entertaining. Satires are read because they are aesthetically satisfying works of art, not because they are morally wholesome or ethically instructive.

◆Topic 3: Will petty criminals get light punishment? Questions for Reference: 1. A new prosecution guideline was recently released: people convicted of petty crimes may get light punishment if they are minors, the elderly people, and people who have slightly breached the law because of poverty. What do you think of this new law? 2. This new law is said to be a humane practice and it will help them put their lives back in order and better serve their families. Do you think it can achieve its end? 3. Some people think that if petty crimes are not punished in a timely way, more serious consequences will follow. What do you think of this argument?

My name is…My registration number is…My topic is: Will petty criminals get light punishment?
A new prosecution guideline was recently released. It says that if the petty criminals are minors, old or very poor, they may get light punishment. The public hold different attitudes towards this guideline.
Some people think that the regulation violates the principle that “everyone is equal before the law”. It also breaches the legal principle that citizens’ property is inviolable. But more people, me included, think that the new guideline represents the combination of leniency and severity, and it helps to promote social harmony. Although China is now richer than before, the gap between the rich and the poor is widening. Therefore, social conflicts may arise due to the widening of such gaps and there is the possibility for those who lack basic social security to violate laws for survival. As a way to tackle these problems, the judicial system surely needs to do something for the disadvantaged group. The stipulation that people who have committed a small crime because of poverty will be exempted from prosecution is actually a kind of protection to the helpless from a legal perspective.
Furthermore, we all know that the objective of the judicial system is to prevent crimes rather than to punish wrongdoers. If one is severely punished because he steals bread for survival, the punishment may damage his whole life and lead him to commit more serious crimes. Severity does reflect justice and objectivity, but sometimes leniency can be more effective in saving the soul of an individual, because it will affect the hearts and minds of the petty criminals. It reflects tolerance and humanity and may play a more positive role in helping criminals make a fresh start.
In a word, if the law can show both leniency and severity at the same time, it will be the most

Practice 6 A certain historical distance has always existed between the Asian region and the international organization. Most of New York’s energy is consumed by the Middle East and Africa, not Asia. The UN is Atlanticist in structure and sometimes in orientation. There have been several signs in recent years, however, of a quickening of interactions between the UN and Asia. First, the end of the cold war broke the superpower deadlock in the Security Council, conjured up new confidence about the organization’s place in international relations and was followed by the establishment of two of the UN’s largest and most complex peace operations, in Cambodia and East Timor. Second, the emergence of new and interconnected5 security threats in the region, including infectious diseases, resource scarcity, environmental catastrophes such as the 2004 tsunami, trafficking in drugs and people, and state failure, has demonstrated the advantages of international cooperation. As these threats escalate, so will the work of the UN and its agencies. Third, as the focus of international power moves towards them6, Asian states are stepping up their engagement with the world body. The top five contributors of peacekeeping personnel are all from the UN’s Asian regional group. Both Japan and India remain intent on permanent membership of the Security Council. Most striking of all is China’s increasingly practical behavior in New York. China was once poorly represented, defensive in the Council and uninterested in peacekeeping: now it is ably represented, confident and skillful in the chamber8 and before the media, and deploys more peacekeeping personnel than any other permanent member.

Satire exists because there is need for it. It has lived because readers appreciate a refreshing stimulus, an irreverent reminder that they live in a world of platitudinous thinking, cheap moralizing, and foolish philosophy. Satire serves to prod people into an awareness of truth, though rarely to any action on behalf of truth. Satire tends to remind people that much of what they see, hear, and read in popular media is sanctimonious, sentimental, and only partially true. Life resembles in only a slight degree the popular image of it. Soldiers rarely hold the ideals that movies attribute to them, nor do ordinary citizens devote their lives to unselfish service of humanity. Intelligent people know these things but tend to forget them when they do not hear them expressed.

Practice 1 When a new movement in art attains a certain fashion, it is advisable to find out what its advocates are aiming at, for, however farfetched and unreasonable their principles may seem today, it is possible that in years to come they may be regarded as normal. With regard to Futurist poetry, however, the case is rather difficult, for whatever Futurist poetry may be even admitting that the theory on which it is based may be right, it can hardly be classed as Literature. This, in brief, is what the Futurist says. Over one century, the life situation in the past had been changed rapidly. And now, we live in the world which is full of noise, violence and speed.

The celebrations of Easter have many customs and legends that have nothing to do with Christianity. Among various symbols associated with Easter, Easter bonny has been playing an important part. In pagan times, the “Easter hare” was no ordinary animal, but a sacred companion of the old goddess of spring, Eastre. The Easter bunny has its origin in pre-Christian fertility lore. The Hare and the Rabbit were the most fertile animals known and they served as symbols of the new life during the Spring season. Hares are animals which look like rabbits, but are larger and in many countries quite rare. In most places, the Easter rabbit (bunny) has replaced the Easter hare completely. Since long before Jesus Christ was born, parents told their children that the magic hare would bring them presents at the spring festival. The presents were often painted eggs, as these represented the new life starting at this time of year.

Practice 6 A: What is important when...? Keeping excellent staff ● Attractive salary ● Comfortable company culture ●Opportunities to improve B: What is important when...? Selling a new product ●Discount ●Quality ● Advertising

    If you choose A:
Firstly, the reward of a job is absolutely vital to many experienced staff for they made great contribution to the company. So an attractive salary is necessary. Otherwise, why would they apply themselves to piles of documents and pages of codes? Providing an attractive salary is very important to keep excellent and experienced staff.
Secondly, it is also sensible to form a relaxing and comfortable company environment for the staff. Working five days a week means that they spend quite a large part of their time in the company, and it is apparent that a pleasant atmosphere will be quite attractive.
Thirdly, companies can’t afford to neglect giving staff opportunities to improve their professional skills and other comprehensive abilities. Otherwise, staff will be concerned that one day they would be out-dated in terms of skills.
    If you choose B:
When selling a new product, discounts should be taken into account. By giving his counterpart a favorable discount in selling a new product, a dealer will be able to reach an agreement with the other party more easily. .And their volumes of transaction are more likely to grow larger.
In addition, quality is equally important. As the life of the product, quality is a decisive factor. Mediocre products will damage the company’s reputation, and cause a loss of consumers at last.
Furthermore, an ingeniousadvertising campaign will catch the eyes of the masses due to the daily ad bombardment in their everyday lives.
