What is the 'biggest city in the world? That is, (21) city has the largest population? This seems like (22) question to answer, but actually it isn't.

It's actually rather difficult to say which cities (23) the largest. There are two reasons for this difficulty. First of all, it isn't easy to determine a city's boundaries, that is, where a city ends. Nowadays, nearly all cities have a large (24) area around them. So when we talk about the population of a city, we often mean the population of the whole metropolitan area around the city. That means that it's difficult to determine what the population of a city is because it's difficult to define what a city is.

The second reason that it is difficult to 25 the population of different cities is this: it is almost impossible to get (26) about the population of all cities for the same year. For example, we might get an estimate of New York's population in 1979 and an (27) of Mexico City's population in 1981. So we real ly can't compare the numbers because the information is for (28) different years. And the population of cities changes rather quickly, especially in some cases. For example, the population of Jakarta, Indonesia, may increase by 5% each year, so the population figure will change rather quickly.

So we can say that these are our two (29) for comparing the populations of cities: one, it's difficult to determine the (30) of a city, and two, it is difficult to get accurate information.

    Putting Plants to Work

Using the power of the sun is nothing new.People have had solar-powered calculators and buildings with
solar panels(太阳能电池板)for decades. But plants are the real experts. They' ve been using sunlight as an
energy source for billions of years.
Cells in the green leaves of plants work like tiny factories to convert sunlight, carbon dioxide(二氧化
    碳),and water into sugars
and starche(淀粉),stored energy that the piants can use. This conversion
process is called photosynthesis (光合作用)Unfortunately, unless you' re a plant, it's difficult and
expensive to convert sunlight into storable energy. That's why scientists are taking a closer look at exactly
    how plants do it.
Some scientists are trying to get plants,or biological cells that act like plants, to work as very small
photosynthesic power stations. For example, Maria Ghirardi of the National Renewable Energy Laboratory in
Golden. Cobo.,is working with green algae(水藻).She's trying to trick them into producing hydrogen
instead of sugars when they perform photosynthesis. Once the researchers can get the algae working efficient-
ly ,the hydrogen that they produce could be used to power fuel cells in cars or to generate electricity.
The algae are grown in narrow-necked glass bottles to produce hydrogen in the lab. During photosynthe-
sis , plants normally make sugars or strchds. "But under certain conditions,a lot of algae are able to use the
sunlight energy not to store starch , but to make hydrogen."Ghirardi says. For example ,algae will produce hy-
drogen in an airfree environment. It' s the oxygen in the air that prevents algae from making hydrogen most of
    the time.
Working in an airfree environment, however, is difficult. It's not a practical way to produce cheap
energy. But Ghirardi and her colleagues have discovered that by removing a chemical called sulfate(硫酸盐)
from the environment that the algae grow in, they will make hydrogen instead of sugars, even when air
    is present.
Unfortunately, removing the sulfate also makes the algae's cells work very slowly, and not much
hydrogen is produced. Still ,the researchers see this as a first step in their goal to produce hydrogen efficiently
from algae. With more work, they may be able to speed the cells' activity and produce larger quantities
    of hydrogen.
The researchers hope that algae will one day be an easy-to-use fuel source. The organisms are cheap to
get and to feed, Ghirardi says, and they can grow almost anywhere:"You can grow them in a reactor, in a
pond. You can grow them in the ocean. There's a lot of flexibility in how you can use these organisms."

Researchers find it difficult to make algae produce hydrogen efficiently because_______________.
A:it is hard to create an airfree environment
B:it is expensive to remove the sulfate from the environment
C:removing the sulfate slows down hydrogen production
D:the algae's cells work slowly if there is no oxygen in the air

    答案:C
由第一段第三、四句话“But plants are the real experts. They' ye been using sunlight as an energy source for billions of years.”
由文章第四段最后两句“…algae will produce hydrogen in an airfree environment. It' s the oxygen in the air that prevents algae from making hydrogen most of the time.(……
故选A。

    Plants in Desert
Only special plants can survive the terrible climate of a desert, for these are regions where the annual range of the soil temperature can be over 75℃.Furthermore,during the summer there are few clouds in the sky to protect plants from the sun's ray.Another problem is the fact that there are frequently strong winds that drive small, sharp particles of sand into the plants, tearing and damaging them. The most difficult problem for all forms of plant life, however,is the fact that the entire annual rainfall occurs during a few days or weeks in spring.
Grasses and flowers in desert survive from one year to the next by existing through the long, hot, dry season in the form of seeds. These seeds remain inactive unless the right amount of rain falls. If no rain falls,or if insufficient rain falls, they wait until the next year,or even still the next.Another factor that helps these plants to survive is the fact that their life cycles are short.By the time the water from the spring rains disappears-just a few weeks after it falls-such plants no longer need any.
The perennials(多年生植物)have special features that enable them to survive as plants for several years. Thus, nearly all desert perennials have extensive root systems below ground and a small shoot system above ground. The large root network enables the plant to absorb as much water as possible in short time.
The small shoot system,on the other hand, considerably limits water loss by evaporation(蒸发).
Another feature of many perennials is that after the rainy season they lose their leaves in preparation for the long, dry season, just as trees in wetter climates lose theirs in preparation for the winter. This reduces their water loss by evaporation during the dry season. Then,in next rainy season, they come fully alive once more, and grow new branches, leaves and flowers, just as the grasses and flowers in desert do.

    A:Right
    B:Wrong
    C:Not mentioned

    答案:A

M: Hello. Juliet. I know you are one of the few women taxi drivers in the city now, and you drive for a living. What made you want to become a taxi driver in the first place?
W: I took pride in driving well even when I was young, for I had to wait until I had a car to learn to drive. When I finally learned, it was something I really enjoyed and still enjoy. I remembered how smart those taxi drivers had seemed driving so well, and dressed so neatly in their uniforms and I thought I’d like to do that myself.
M: You really enjoy driving, I see. And how long have you been a taxi driver?
W: Er, all together 12 years.
M: Mm, for quite some time already, hasn’t it?
    W: Yeah.
M: Then, what did you find the most difficult about becoming a taxi driver?
W: I can still remember when I was first learning to drive—it was scary, didn’t know yet how to judge distance, and when a big truck came near it seemed like its wheels would just come right over me. Anyway, soon I learned to judge distance. I began looking ahead, stopped worrying about trucks and about what was moving on either side.
M: In your opinion, what does it take to become a good driver?
W: Eh, besides driving well, the most important thing a taxi driver needs to know is the streets, and I knew the city well because I had lived in it for a long time. I knew all the main streets, and even the side streets. And of course you have to keep updating your knowledge of the streets, because the city changes. There might be a new road appearing somewhere one day.
M: Now, what about annual leaves? Do you have them?
W: Oh, yes. When I first started, I had only ten days. Now, I have three weeks every year, with pay.
M: Just out of curiosity. When you go on vacation to another place or city, do you drive there as well?
W: In most cases, not. I prefer to be driven by others, if we go by car. I would also prefer to go by train or plane, if there is a choice. I have already had too much driving in my life. So, when on holiday, I just want to relax.
M: I see. Let’s come back to your work. Are there any unpleasant aspects in your job?
W: The only serious difficulty in this work is that it’s sometimes dangerous to drive at night. But you have a choice, and I always choose to work days rather than nights.
M: Then, what is the best part of your job?
W: I soon found that what I liked best about this job was being outdoors, seeing how the city changes from season to season. And there are places I’ve seen that I probably never would have seen in another job, and I love all kinds of weather. I like to leave the window down in a fine rain. And. and when I have a long drive near the end of the day, I sometimes go past my home to tell my two little children I’ll be home soon, and they always want to come along in my car.
M: Oh, do they? I guess all kids like to be taken for a ride sometimes.
W: Yeah, But you cannot take anyone along unless they pay or you pay for them. So I’ll have to pay their fares one of these days and take them out in my taxi, because they really think it’s fun. Out in the countryside on a long drive, with the air fresh and the sun shining, you just seem to want to drive forever. At least, that’s how it is for me.
M: Being a taxi driver, you have to meet all kinds of people. How do you feel about that?
W: I enjoy meeting many different people. I might not have met some if not for this job, and I’ve learned a lot about how people behave in these years.
M: Can you tell us a bit more about it?
W: The biggest advantage is that you come across various characters in your work. Some people are interesting, some rushed, some pleasant, some funny, some talkative. Some are so pressed for time that they change clothes in the taxi. Those who are in the greatest rush would sometimes forget to pay.
M: Have you ever met someone who doesn’t like women drivers?
W: Yes. Once a passenger really objected to having a woman driver, and I laughed at him so much that he stopped his fussing. Although there has been one or two cases like this, I still think most people are nice to women drivers. So, this is really an interesting part of my work.
M: Now, my last question. Have you ever thought of changing your job?
W: Not yet. I might, in a few years’ time. But not at this moment, because I really enjoy my work, and I do get a lot of satisfaction out of it. So, why should I?
M: Ok. Our interview is coming to the end. I’d like to wind up our interview by wishing you good luck. Thank you very much for your time, Juliet.
    W: Pleasure.
    1. Why did Juliet become a taxi driver?
    2. According to Juliet, what was the most difficult about becoming a taxi driver?
    3. What does Juliet like best about her job?
    4. What is the character of Juliet as a mother according to the interview?
    5. What can we learn about the people Juliet meets?

Why do plants grow in some places and not in others? Why does some land have so much growing on it,while other land has almost no plants growing on it at all?

To grow plants need several things. One is warmth. In very cold places almost nothing grows. Plants also need water. In very dry parts of the earth only a few unusual plants can grow. That's why dry deserts everywhere are almost not covered by trees or grass.

Plants must also have a place in which to f,ut down their roots and grow. They find it diffi-culr to grow on hard land. The town is built on hard land. The plants here have only the soil found between the cracks of the stones Io grow in.

Another thing plants must have before they can grow is food.

Whar will happen if we try to make things grow on the sandy beach? A few plants, such as beach grass, will grow in sand,L ut most plants won-t. Plant Gas

Scientists have been studying natural sources of methane(甲烷,沼气)for decades but hadn't regarded plants as a producer, notes Frank Keppler, a geochemist(地球化学家)at the Max Planck Institute for Nuclear Physics in Heldelberg,Germany. Now Keppler and his colleagues find that plants, from grasses to trees, may also be sources of the greenhouse gas. This is really surprising, because most scientists assumed that methane production requires an oxygen-free environment.
Previously, researchers had thought that it was impossible for plants to make significant amounts of the gas. They had assumed that microbes(微生物)need to be in environments without oxygen to produce methane.Methane is a greenhouse gas, like carbon dioxide.Gases such as methane and carbon dioxide trap heat in Earth's atmosphere and contribute to global warming.
In its experiments, Keppler's team used sealed chambers(室,房间;腔)that contained the same concentration of oxygen that Earth's atmosphere has. They measured the amounts of methane that were released by both living plants and dried plant material, such as fallen leaves.
With the dried plants, the researchers took measurement at temperatures ranging from 30 degrees Celsius to 70 degrees C.At 30 degrees C.,they found,a gram of dried plant material released up to 3 nanograms(微克)of methane per hour(One nanogram is a millionth of a gram). With every 10-degree rise in temperature, the amount of methane released each hour roughly doubled.
Living plants growing at their normal temperatures released as much as 370 nanograms of methane per gram of plant tissue per hour. Methane emissions tripled when living and dead plant was exposed to sunlight.
Because there was plenty of oxygen available,it's unlikely that the types of bacteria(bacterium的复数,细菌)that normally make methane were involved. Experiments on plants that were grown in water rather than soil also resulted in methane emissions. That's another strong sign that the gas came from the plants and not soil microbes.
The new finding is an"interesting observation,"says Jennifer Y. King,a biogeochemist(生物地球化学家)at the University of Minnesota in St. Paul. Because some types of soil microbes consume methane, they may prevent plant-produced methane from reaching the atmosphere.Field tests will be needed to assess the plant's influence, she notes.

Which statement is true of the methane emissions of plants in the experiment?
A:The lower the temperature, the higher the amount of methane emissions.
B:Living plants release less methane than dried plants at the same temperature.
C:When exposed to sunlight, plants stop releasing methane.
D:The higher the temperature, the greater the amount of methane emissions.

Most scientists assumed that … , They had assumed that.…
